SAMUEL ISHAM

American (1855 – 1914)

Samuel Isham wore many hats as art historian, critic, lawyer, artist and author. His book, A History of American Paintings, was one of the first major histories of American art. First published in 1905, the work, referenced by students and scholars alike, offered an interesting, straightforward and intellectual account of the subject.

“The Philosopher’s Walk,” most likely executed in the 1880’s in France, is a rare example of his landscape painting.
